But, in ancient time, a thousand years back, Khajuraho was a big city and the capital of the Chandelas, Rajput Kings of middle ages who governed over Central India from the 10th to 12th century. Initially, there were over 80 temples in Khajuraho, but at present only 22 temples are standing in a realistic condition of preservation. These temples are dispersed over an area of around twenty-one square kilometer (21 km2 ).

Southern Group of Temples Travel: This group lies around 5 km from Khajuraho village. Duladeo Temple - dedicated to Lord Shiva and Chaturbhuj Temple - dedicated to Lord Vishnu are the major temples of this group.
